How
In Japan there are many different ways a geisha must look depending on the occasion. The most noticeable thing would be the kimonos they wear which are very expensive and are made out of silk. One cannot put on a kimono on their own because of the many folds you must do and the certain way it is supposed to look, because of this geisha have someone who will help them put one on. Depending on the occasion the kimono will have a different variety of colors and designs, something that will always be the same is the shape of the kimono, they are single pieced, long and straight. Kimonos were originally created by Tsukioka Settei Japanese. Another thing a geisha will often wear with a kimono is a sash, over time it was changed to an obi, or a stiff cloth.
The second thing a geisha must do to maintain how she looks would be the style of her coiffure (hair). The coiffure was ornamented with many combs and hairpins of different materials: lacquered wood, tortoiseshell, bone, glass, and silver. Hairstylists would go street to street going around and fixing geishas hair each day. It can take hours each day for a geisha to get ready, this is because their appearance is part of their attire.
Each girl must grow their hair out very long so it can later can be shaped into a makio hairstyle. Before a girl can become a makio they are an apprentice, as an apprentice they work hard to maintain how they look. Apprentice geisha spend hours a week with a hairdresser to maintain their hair. Later when a maiko becomes a geisha they will switch what they used to wear as a red collar for a white one.
